In just half a century starting in the 1850s, amidst intense foreign pressure and domestic turmoil, Japan underwent major political, cultural, and industrial reform. The leaders of this time risked their lives to lay the foundations of an independent modern Japan. Many were men of humble origin in their teens, 20s and 30s. Above all, they were passionate about creating a better society and a stronger nation. The Ryozen Museum of History in Higashiyama, Kyoto is focused on the study of a momentous time in Japan’s history: the Bakumatsu period and the Meiji Restoration. Our mission is to accurately present the ideas and actions of the leaders of the time and provide today’s young people a fresh perspective on the future. The museum’s permanent exhibition features a selection of about 100 items from its collection of over 5,000 artifacts related to individuals like Sakamoto Ryoma and groups like the Shinsengumi.
